What is a home theater system?
The goal of any home theater is to reproduce -- or surpass -- the movie experience you get at the theater. You want big picture and great sound. So a home theater system is one that lets you reproduce the total movie experience. At minimum, that requires a flat penal TV, a media player like a Blu-Ray or DVD, speakers, and a receiver or control unit for the speakers. There are a number of other components you'll need to make it all work, such as remotes, AV cables, mounts and/or stands, and power protection.
More ambitious home theaters include dedicated seating and projection systems as partially seen in the photo below.

Televisions and HDTVs
There are three elements to the home theater experience; sight, sound, and seating. Sight means television. A home theater system should have a high-definition (720p, 1080i, or 1080p) flat-panel television with a screen of at least 37 inches in diagonal size that is either mounted on the wall or on a TV console. For more on televisions, read our Guide to Buying a TV.
Media Players
Another piece of the sight element is a media player. This can be a DVD player or a Blu-Ray player, a Digital Video Recorder or a Media Center computer. Whatever the source, the player is a device that plays back stored video and audio instead of "live" TV, cable, or satellite signals.
Receivers
A receiver decodes the video and audio signals coming from a player or live source, the sends them on to your television and speakers. It may upscale the signal to enhance its quality. The receiver is important for the sound element of the experience since it can adjust the sound for your room, control the volume, and determines how the video signal gets to the TV screen.
Speakers
Even great sound coming out of the receiver will disappoint you if you don't have good speakers. Choose your speakers with care. They can be stereo or surround sound.
